Making a difference, being a Tearfund rep

How did you come to be involved with TearFund?

I picked up a copy of Tear Times (The Tearfund magazine) at the back of church one Sunday. I was really moved reading the stories of people whose lives had been changed by their help and by the way they did it - by helping local churches to help their own communities. I knew I had to become involved.

Exploring Celtic Christianity, as a family

How did you come to be involved with the Northumbria Community?

We'd been inspired by the "Northern Saints" for some time - people like St Cuthbert and St Aidan. Partly because of that we were drawn to visit the beautiful countryside in Northumbria, and the Christian historical sites in that area. The children could relate to historical characters like Cuthbert when we visited a place, and looked at where he prayed, or went to places mentioned in the early accounts (Bede, for example), or when we visited the priory on Lindisfarne.

Can you tell us about your situation?

When I became a Christian in 1990, I had little idea how my faith would be tested. Two years on, my husband and I realised that the only way we would be able to have children was, as the blunt speaking Australian urologist told us …'adoption or donor insemination'.

It was a bolt out of the blue and we started a journey together that has stretched our emotional and spiritual foundations.

Dyslexia challenged my faith

Can you describe what happened to you?

I've always struggled with maths - even basic number work is hard for me. So when I enrolled as a mature student at the local university, I decided to try and get some help. The Three Dimensional Design degree, (ceramics) I'm doing isn't academic - but it still requires a fair amount of writing and mathematics, and this increases as the course goes on.

I got in touch with the Learning Support Department that is based in the university campus, and arranged an appointment to see an education psychologist for some testing and advice.

I was surprised at how emotional and nervous I felt

Mums in holiday youth ministry

What is a Scripture Union camp, and how did you get involved with one?

I first went on a Scripture Union camp as a fourteen year old. I was roped in by our youth leaders at the last minute. I had little idea of what to expect before I went but had the time of my life, met some great people and met with God. That was 1991 and I'm still going 13 years later - only now I take my husband along and our three children too!
