Raising a child with Down's Syndrome

Our fourth child, Johanna, was born in March 2000. I was almost 45, so I knew I had a significant risk of having a child with Down's Syndrome. I'm a natural pessimist so I waited anxiously for the midwife to pronounce that she was "OK". Everything seemed to be normal, so I breathed a sigh of relief.

It wasn't until next day, after the doctor's round, that we were told they thought Johanna had Down's Syndrome.

Help! - I'm a Grandma

Can you describe what it is like becoming a grandparent?

I had mixed feelings when our son and his wife, Tim and Claire, announced that they were expecting their first child. I had always very much looked forward to grandchildren, having greatly enjoyed being a mum, but was worried on two counts.

My Christian Nursery

Can you explain briefly who you are and what your nursery is like?

My name is Paullette Jean-Jacques and I am a 41 year old mother of two children. Lauren aged 9 and Benjamin aged 6.

Granary Pre-Schools is a full day Christian nursery. We take children from the age of 18 months to 5 years. No child is excluded and we have many children from Muslim and Hindu backgrounds, as well as Christian backgrounds.

Young Carers

Sandra has been involved in work with young carers for some time. I asked her to tell us a bit more about the work she does.

CMs talks to a bereavement counsellor

Barbara is a trained bereavement counsellor. She set up a bereavement support group in her church and has agreed to answer some questions for us about it.
